Manny Pacquiao is US writers’ Fighter of the Year for 2008

Fighter of the Year for 2008

Manny Pacquiao has just been awarded Fighter of the Year for 2008 by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA). This is Pacquiao’s second time to receive the said award. The first time was in 2006.

His sensational win over Ricky Hatton last May 3, makes Pacquiao an early candidate for the 2009 award. If he continues to shine this year and received his third top fighter award, he will be joining the ranks of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard and Evander Holyfield, who were so far the only fighters who received the award three times.

Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, meanwhile bagged the Trainer of the Year award, his third. His first was in 2003 and then again in 2006.

Manny flew all the way to New York to personally received the award last Friday.

In his acceptance speech, Pacquiao said it was “a great honor” to be chosen as the top fighter for 2008.

“It is for this reason that I chose to travel half across the globe to personally receive this award tonight,” said Pacquiao in his classic dark suit and gray tie. He came with his wife, Jinkee.

“It would surely pain me not to come accept this prestigious award personally. I want to let you know that it is a privilege to personally receive this award and thank everybody for their trust and confidence you have given me,” he added.

Pacquiao thanked the Filipino nation, his family, his promoter Bob Arum, trainer Freddie Roach, and members of Team Pacquiao.
