President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will finally meet US President Barack Obama as she was invited to meet Obama at Washington DC on July 30, 2009. An invitation which the Philippine president readily accepted.
The meeting makes President Arroyo the first Southeast Asian leader to meet with the 44th president of the US. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, she was also the first leader to talk with Obama after his election.
“The visit to Washington DC is an affirmation of the strong partnership between the two countries that share historical and cultural ties and common democratic values,” the DFA said in a statement.
During her visit, she will also meet with members of the US Congress, administration officials, businessmen and the Filipino-American community.
She is also expected to discuss “the Philippines’ poverty alleviation and economic resiliency programs, good governance, counter-terrorism efforts, and its contributions to peace and security in the region,” the DFA said.
